Mr. Paulsen has taught at University High in the Science department since 1985.  He was a Partners in Science research fellow at UCLA in the department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, a partner teacher in the UCLA SEE-LA/National Science Foundation GK-12 program, and is an adjunct instructor at UCLA in the CalTeach program.

His research interests include a "green" solvent-free synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid and related compounds, the identification and behavior of catalysts, Liesegang rings, growing minerals in gel matrices, organic qualitative analysis, and the complete synthesis and analysis of potassium trisoxalatoferrate(III) trihydrate and potassium trisoxalatoaluminate trihydrate.  Mr. Paulsen has participated in archaeological excavations in Northern and Southern California, Benin, and Israel.
